How to write an essay in a proper format

As you write your essay, you should follow these steps to ensure you produce something brilliant and right on task:

  • Step 1: Answer the actual question.
  • Sadly, many students neglect this. They get carried away or accidentally mis-read the instructions, thereby answering the wrong question by mistake. This can lead to grave disasters that adversely affect your grade. So it is important that you review the task requirements and that you understand exactly what is expected of you. If you are unclear about anything, ask.

  • Step 2: Craft a good introduction.
  • The introduction is a concise summary of the points that you will cover in your essay. If it is appropriate for the type of essay you are writing, you can clarify key concepts or terms. Introductions should not be bulked with detail. You want to save the main arguments and supporting evidence for the body of your text. It is best to start with short sentences in the introduction, even if just for the draft, in lieu of complex sentences. This will give you clarity for your overall purpose.

  • Step 3: Plan your essay.
  • Many students neglect to plan their essay or take time to gather their thoughts. It is important that you do this and thereby avoid neglecting a key argument. Planning your essay gives you a chance to brainstorm the things you already know about your topic and what you still need to find out. While brainstorming, write down some key phrases and keywords that you can then convert into sentences for your introduction.

  • Step 4: Make the argument.
  • There are three steps you should follow the make the argument:

    1. The first step to making an argument is to write down a basic statement. If you can condense your paper’s purpose into a single sentence, you have passed a great test of knowledge and are ready to write.
    2. The second step is to explain the aforementioned sentence. You want to relate this statement to your essay question or topic. Just because your explanation might be obvious does not mean you should not write it down.
    3. The third step is to evaluate your argument from a critical standpoint. Discuss why your argument might fail or the areas where it is limited. It is also a chance for you to think for yourself and analyze or evaluate your list of points and supporting evidence.
